Mark Byrum was born and raised near the Missouri River in Central South Dakota. Mr. Byrum left the home place after a year of college and headed west working on ranches in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, and California.

The pride the buckaroos showed in the care they took of their gear rubbed off on Mark. Mark noticed a lot of the buckaroos were making their own gear.

He became determined to master the saddle making craft on his own. Beginning in the bunkhouse with only a book and a minimum of hand tools he completed his first saddle.

Deciding to hone his self-taught skills, Mark headed to Okalahoma State University where he received an Associate degree from the Shoe, Boot and Saddle Program. Mike Dewitt, master craftsman and head instructor, helped to develop Mark’s talents and teach the business aspects of the leather industry. Mark gives credit to saddle makers from all over the country for helping with his questions.

“I am sure it is to my advantage to have spent so many hours in the saddle, especially when a lot of that time was spent on a Dale Harwood saddle,” Mark says.
